the dinners.( les soupeurs- pablo, picasso)
When I saw this picture at first, I felt something powerful. I felt power from it because of the color that it has. There are primary red, black, white and especially green is allover the painting. There is light and I coule feel it from the shadow of the face. And this light seems to be weak because I do not see any strong contrast of shdows. In terms of composition of it, the upper line of table devided horizontally two parts but a white dress that a woman is wearing helps the picture not to be boring that is the vague boder line between the white table clothes and a white dress does not pull my eyes to the center of it. The artist used semilar size of brush strokes but it is not static because of their different direcrions. The table has small contrast of value and it is kind of even tone, so I could not recognize this at first time. Usually, figures are a strong eye tracker but in this painting the floor seems to be subject. It is like the main subject is switched with the background. In detail, the expression of faces makes the figures main subject.

when i read the her comments , i totally agree her opinion.
I absolutely agree with your idea about the vivid red floor as background. It also seems to be the most dominant to me. I felt the power of the color just like you posted though, I can’t interpret the light in the shadow as the weak light on your third sentence. I guess this light means that the man’s face is painted with shadow part and just bright skin color part, so you might think about this light source is not that strong. However I think this light source is quite strong. Look at the woman’s face and you will find out her face is like just flat. Unless the luminous source is not intense, her face also should be shaded. And the table is also real white flat feeling, though the touch of brush makes it not to seem to be boring. (Please explain about in the class, tomorrow morning.)
And you said because of the white dressed woman sitting on the table made this picture’s composition not seems to be tedious, I also agree with this, but I want to add the effect which is the yellow part in the top side of this painting. This powerful yellow wall pushes down the eye chasing and the horizontal length seems to be shorter.
This painting is horizontally divided three parts which are painted by yellow as the wall, red as the floor and white as the table. I think these prominent colors are not that easy to use for the background color like floor or wall. However Picasso made it possible because he didn’t use the color just flatly but scattered with different directions, like you said.
When I read her opinion, I totally agree her opinion. I have to feel some interest things about this work. First of all, in color, I was also attracted strong color gives me powerful impression. As her opinion, it has the primary colors –red, yellow, white and black have closely connection with composition. For having high contrast of the color in background, the figures are emphasized. The extreme contrast of color in wearing clothes is also impressed and pulled me this drawing. Secondly, In terms of lighting, she also comments that it has not spotlight but express shadow using value. So we can know the space of this drawing. Third, the similar strokes and the expression s of face is gave to me rhythmical volume although it has static composition. In addtion, Even though this painting do not have smooth visual movements, it stimulate to my eye. And about detail, the artistic touch of details make drawing to get more abundant feelings.
